About Zauq Delhi
Sheikh Ibrahim Zauq was the Poet Laureate of the Mughal court under Bahadur Shah Zafar, and the greatest rival of Mirza Ghalib in the golden age of Delhi Urdu poetry. Born in Delhi in 1789, he was a master of the qasida (ode) as well as the ghazal, and his verse is marked by its classical elegance, its wit, and a philosophical depth that emerges from the simplest language. He was the teacher of Bahadur Shah Zafar himself. He died in Delhi in 1854, just three years before the city he loved was destroyed in the uprising of 1857.
