About Wali Deccani

Wali Muhammad Wali, known as Wali Deccani or Wali Gujarati, is the father of the Urdu ghazal — the poet who brought the Deccani Urdu tradition to Delhi and transformed it into the classical form that Mir, Ghalib, and all subsequent poets would inherit. Born in Aurangabad around 1667, his visit to Delhi in 1700 is one of the pivotal moments in the history of Urdu literature. His Diwan, circulated in Delhi, inspired an entire generation of poets to take up the ghazal form. He is the fountainhead of the classical Urdu tradition.
