About Sahir Ludhianvi
Sahir Ludhianvi — born Abdul Hayee — was the most politically conscious and romantically intense film lyricist of Hindi cinema's golden age. Born in Ludhiana in 1921, he combined a Marxist worldview with a lyrical gift of rare beauty. His debut collection Talkhiyaan (Bitternesses) established him as a major Urdu poet before he became the dominant voice of Hindi film songs. His lyrics for films like Pyaasa, Kabhi Kabhi, and Trishul are among the finest poetry ever written for the screen. He died in Bombay in 1980, leaving behind a body of work that continues to define the sound of longing in Hindi.
