About Mir Taqi Mir

Mir Taqi Mir, known simply as Mir, is the undisputed master of the Urdu ghazal. Born in Agra around 1723, he spent most of his creative life in Delhi before moving to Lucknow in his old age. He witnessed the sack of Delhi by Nadir Shah and the slow dissolution of the Mughal world — and this grief became the very substance of his poetry. Mir's ghazals are marked by their simplicity, their emotional depth, and a quality of sorrow so pure it transcends personal loss to become universal. Ghalib called him the god of poetry. He died in Lucknow in 1810, leaving behind six divans — the largest body of Urdu ghazals by any single poet.
